Well sure, if you go all the way back to the beginning, all the good stuff hadn't been invented yet. Neither had 3 of the 4 great inventions. Still, I wouldn't exactly call the Han and Song or even Ming dynasties "fairly recent" though, unless you're just showing off. =P
