You know...let's focus on happy thoughts
Thursday, March 11th, 2021 12:10I was going to write a very long rant about the inherent hypocrisy of people who proudly boycott fountain pens from China by citing "labor ethics" while ignoring ethical and safety violations by American meat packing industry or continue to use smartphones that are manufactured in China. Even if you somehow managed to avoid using a smartphone that was made in China, do you manage to avoid all the American companies that have factories in China? Because I can guarantee you that these companies are not checking their factory's work conditions. And even those foreign owned Chinese factories are outsourcing to Chinese owned factories, so...
...but you know what? That requires understanding the complexities of the global supply chain and accepting that we're not in the Cold War anymore. Economic blocs don't exist in the current global market and your pathetic boycotting serves no function beyond pointless virtue signaling. You want to protest the Chinese government? Get your government to change their foreign policies. (In other words, demand to know your candidates' foreign policy stances.) But most of you don't actually care to achieve any real progress, or you'd be out there lobbying on matters of foreign affairs. Instead, you boycott a privately owned stationary company just because they are a Chinese company.
Hiding racism behind false concerns about "labor ethics" is so fucking typical.
No, let's not think about any of that. Instead, I'm going to focus on the statistical pretzel-logic mentioned in XKCD, because nerd humor is always more relaxing. Also, I deeply identify with this.
