【景枫/景恒】旖旎月迷
Jing Yuan gets roofied, Dan Feng helps out.

Pros:

  • Top!Jing Yuan

  • Protective!Dan Feng

  • Semi-classical writing style (during the non-porn bits)

  • Using medical gel as lubrication.

  • Dan Feng is offended that Jing Yuan is using his medicine for butt sex. 😆

Cons:

  • Not sure why Dan Heng is tagged because he doesn't show up at all in this story.

I realized that in my attempt to distract myself from HSR, I got sucked into a fandom that has even less activity, so now I'm treading back to 景枫 because even a slow trickle is better than nothing. But thanks to 王砚×兰珏 shipping, I've gotten even more picky over the writing. Because frankly the fanfic in 《君子盟》 fandom is shockingly well written on average. At least what little of it exists.

Also, stylistically, modern Chinese is so much less literary than classical Chinese. Something just feels...bland about modern vernacular Chinese when it's written down. It feels like I'm reading children's writing. Which I am. But I'd like to stop being reminded of that fact.

【景恒/景枫】红妆
Drunk sex. BE.

Pros:

  • Super sweet and gentle TOP!Jing Yuan. I don't even have words for how much I want gentle top to exist in this freaking ship.

  • Young!Jing Yuan behaving like an adult for the most part.

  • Dan Feng is a demanding bottom, lol.

Cons:

  • Not clear why this fic is tagged with Dan Heng since he doesn't appear in the story.

  • Pacing a bit too slow.

  • Mangina...

I've basically resigned myself to reading pseudo het-smut because apparently gay butt sex is beyond this fandom's ability. (Seriously do not even try to excuse this with trans id pol talking points. There is nothing trans-inclusive when writers slap a vagina on a male presenting character when nothing else in the story deals with gender politics.)

In other news, I've started watching 御赐小仵作(The Imperial Coroner) in an attempt to find a silly period drama with slashfic potential. While I'm enjoying the silly show (even the really bland cliché het romance is mildly amusing) and find the mystery deduction stuff genuinely engaging, the slash ship (瑜翊) is even less popular than 景枫. Shockingly, I think the writing of HSR fic is actually better on average.

Seems like I'm better off sticking to HSR and 景枫/景恒 to satisfy the craving...

For now though, giving Imperial Coroner a recommendation for being a fun mystery. Romance is standard, but the mystery is pretty satisfying.

Edit to add: OK, I'm at episode 11 and the romance is starting to get in the way of the mystery. I don't understand why writers are always failing at writing when romance is involved.

Having given up on 御赐小仵作 in disgust, I've moved on to 君子盟(League of Nobleman) (sic). The show has no female lead, thus no romance, and is significantly better both in terms of acting and writing. It's really a sad state of affairs in pulp entertainment when shows can't seem to figure out how to write a decent story featuring a female lead. It absolutely sucks for women right now.

Also annoyed a bit when I realized while watching 君子盟 that if the main dective was re-casted as a woman, the show will still work just fine. When are writers going to figure out all you have to do to write good female leads is write them exactly as you would write male characters?

【景恒丨景枫】《龙裔体液的一百种用法》《龙精篇》(一) | 《龙漦篇》(二)
Medical uses for dragon-y bodily fluids. Technically hurt-comfort(?).

Pros:

  • Writing is pretty good.

  • WAFF.

  • Jealous of previous incarnation is always a good.

  • Socially awkward Dan Feng doesn't happen enough.

Cons:

  • No real emotional stakes.

While I've been wrangling with my own interpretation of WTF patch 2.5 means for interpreting timeline and scale and relative age when it comes to the Quintet, I'm going through older material and noticing that the most popular fics tend to put characters through a bunch of pointless melodramatic angst (as if Jing Yuan and Dan Feng aren't angsty enough in the canon).

No, like, seriously, isn't canon sad enough as it is? Do we have to pile on even more bullshit? )

【景元x丹枫】枫落无声
Filler fic, mostly focusing on Quintet era, BE.

Pros:

  • Heeeey, someone decided to do something with Jing Yuan's self-sacrificing nature.

  • Jingliu ordering Jing Yuan to fight Dan Feng on their first meeting. XD

  • Hurt-comfort!

  • Dan Feng pissy about Jing Yuan being good at predicting him.

  • War logistics!

Cons:

  • Unrequited romance.

  • BE

  • Don't really agree with the assertion that the only reason Dan Heng saved Jing Yuan was because of past life's muscle memory. I feel like gratitude alone should motivate Dan Heng to save the guy who saved his life, what with him being a heroic character and all...

cashew: Kamui holding a bunch of books (X // even heroes read)

【此夜长】【景恒】说你想我
Dan Heng cares for Jing Yuan after battle with Phantylia, comes to terms with himself.

Pros:

  • Dan Heng emotional arc!

  • Everyone deals with their issues like adults.

  • Emotional torture of Dan Heng and Jing Yuan.

  • Mutual pining.

  • Did I mention adults being adults? Very refreshing.

  • Acknowledgement of Jing Yuan's injury being serious. (Like, can gamers remember that in-game graphics suck at rendering wounds and stuff?)

  • Dan Heng being jealous of Dan Feng. Not nearly enough fic deals with this.

  • Dan Heng earns his happy ending.

cashew: Nokoru looking drained with a steaming cup of tea and his fingers up in a victory sign (CCD // exhausted)

First, hilarious fic: 策士长工作日志一则① & &
Qingzu's headache when it comes to dealing with the many ridiculous stories surrounding Jing Yuan and his "inappropriate relationship" with Imbibitor Lunae.

Pros:

  • So funny, omfg.

  • Hilarious mentions of canonized doujin.

Now, to rant a bit about Jing Yuan and the fangirl's BL shipping goggles.

Just me letting off some steam... )

Edit to add:

I'm kind of annoyed at the one argument from a Jing Yuan/Dan Heng shipper that actually Jing Yuan wasn't close to anyone in the Quintet except to Jingliu, and even that relationship was built on a strict teacher-student dynamic with no emotional ties.

WTF? Like I feel like you'd have to be deliberately obtuse to ignore all the blatant context indicating everyone in the Quintet mattered deeply to Jing Yuan. He's not just an outside observer, he was actively their friend. The fact that Jing Yuan goes to visit Bailu yearly with a made up excuse shows how close he was to Baiheng (since everyone treats Bailu as her direct descendent). The fact that an entire PV was made to address the emotional fallout from Jingliu going crazy shows how much Jingliu mattered emotionally to Jing Yuan. The fact that Jing Yuan spent literal hundreds of years dealing with the mess of the Sedition and continues to defend Dan Feng as a good person (with misguided intentions) proves he deeply cared about Dan Feng. The fact he goes out of his way to get Blade out of prison shows he still values the feelings between him and Ying Xing.

What the hell? Why would issues such as age gap, being a different species, having a different lifespan matter only when it comes to Jing Yuan's closeness to the Quintet but doesn't interfere with anyone else's friendships?! Why is Jingliu/Baiheng totally not affected by their giant age gap and being different species with differing cultural practices?

Shippers drive me crazy sometimes...

【景恒】情有独钟
Imperial AU; Grow up, go to war, get married. WAFF.

Pros:

  • Very good writing

  • No random feminization of either character

  • Interesting integration of Luofu names into Imperial setting

  • WAFF

Cons:

  • I feel like this story is more suited to Dan Feng than Dan Heng, especially when Dan Heng started using healing magic... NGL, definitely replaced Dan Heng with Dan Feng in my head as I was reading

【景恒】純情貓貓糕俏青龍
Cat cake Rice Dumpling falls in love with Jing Yuan and makes Dan Heng jealous.

Pros:

  • Crack

  • I'm so behind cat cake crushing on Jing Yuan, I need more cat cake pining

  • Pining

  • Jing Yuan TOPS! (Not that it actually matters for this fic...)

Cons:

  • Jing Yuan feels slightly malicious... (minor complaint)

【景恒】请成年龙担负起成年龙的责任
Dan Heng trying to work up the nerve to have sex with Jing Yuan, during this process an accidental time travel three-weeks into the past happens and kinky porn is had.

Pros:

  • Crack

  • Jing Yuan TOPS

  • Dan Heng turning into a full sized dragon during foreplay and destroying Jing Yuan's house

  • 龙性本淫 😝

  • Accidentally kinky

Cons:

  • Mangina... although this time there's also a plot justification, so it's just more an eye roll at the trope rather than becoming a peeve

  • I don't buy Jing Yuan would disregard his bed partner's request to stop, I don't care how "turned on" he is in the moment

名声最败坏的时期
Dan Feng gets his period. Reputations (and clothes) are ruined.

Pros:

  • Crack

  • Meaningful female genitalia on masculine presenting characters!!! This is when mangina is justified!

  • Frantic Jing Yuan and Teng Xiao consulting the internet for menstrual cramps advice

  • Dan Feng just wants the cramps to stop

  • Baiheng brought pads! Jingliu did not...

  • Jing Yuan is older than Dan Feng!

Cons:

  • Mood whiplash at the end with Dan Heng

Also, I'm noticing there's been a slow trickle of 景元/椒丘 fic. Yay!

cashew: Immortal's Delight item from Honkai: Star Rail game (Star Rail // Boba)

OK, so having read 景元/雨别 fic (yes, I'm desperate), I now want a fic where all the incarnations of 饮月 (at least those starting from 雨别) have a unrequited thing for 景元 and are all jealous of 丹枫 because he's the one that got the guy.

The reason I want this is two fold:

  1. Vidyadhara falls in love with the same person if said person is met. It could just be this one guy, or it could be due to Vidyadhara might have different identities, but their core personality remains the same, so they'll keep falling for the same type of person. This "jealous of previous incarnation" trope is awesome and I want to see it happen with 饮月君.

  2. If this wiki record is trustworthy (big if), then it seems 龙尊 is doomed to fall into 龙狂. I recall there was also a mention of 龙心 in some dialogue at some point and that said 龙心 has to do with the 龙狂 problem. I would like to work this stuff into the reincarnation soulmate trope.

So.

What if, for whatever timey-wimey reason, 雨别 meets up with an accidentally time-traveling 景元 (even better if this is post-Sedition), and basically falls for him. The reason being that 龙心 sees the guy and is like "YES". But, because 景元 is from the future, he doesn't stay long enough for the relationship to actually go anywhere and the unrequited feelings 雨别 develops slowly drives him into 龙狂, so he has to be forced to reincarnate. That timey-wimey accidental infatuation, being stuck in 龙心, gets passed down through each reincarnation until 丹枫. But since 龙尊 has fragmented memories of the past incarnations, 丹枫 is unsure how much of this is him liking 景元 and how much of it is 龙心, so he's super not willing to admit he likes the guy.

Meanwhile, 景元, who at this point hasn't gone through the timey-wimey process, is basically just being friends and growing close and starts to develop feefees for 丹枫. But since they have very different social positions, 景元 has accepted that he can only admire 丹枫 from afar and be a good friend. A romantic relationship is definitely out of the question. This mutually unrequited thing goes on a bit until, like previous incarnations, 丹枫 succums to 龙狂, puts everyone in danger, 白珩 sacrifices herself to save everyone, 饮月之乱 happens, and 景元 is basically alone, having to clean up the mess. After 丹枫's forced 蜕麟 ritutual and turns into an egg, 景元's immense loneliness plus his newly given ridiculous godly summoning powers, plus whatever Permanence powers that's been brewing inside 饮月君 all reach a harmonic resonance through magic-vibes sends 景元 into the past to kick start all this.

Then 景元 gets back into the correct time point, realizes "oops" and decides OK, fuck it, he has to end this cycle somehow. And the key here is, according to 景元 logic, is because 龙心 is very lonely due to the 龙尊 position. If 饮月 can just meet up with people who treat him as a friend and equal more often, then he wouldn't be so hung up on the first person who showed him friendship with no strings attached. So begins 景元's long political negotiations to get 丹恒 out of prison to go meet up with other people and hopefully fall in love with someone else in his travels through the universe and end the tragic cycle mess.

丹恒 may or may not be entirely cooperative with this grand plan. Probably not cooperative. But he's a tsundere who has a hard time expressing his feefees, so more miscommunication happens. 景元 thinks he's got everything fixed, while 丹恒 is pining away and in denial.

...Somehow this gets fixed and feelings are reciprocated, 龙心 is appeased, 皆大欢喜!

Not a PWP for once

【景恒】向人间(含番外)

Instead of getting kicked out of Luofu immdiately, Jing Yuan secretly raised Dan Heng for a while before releasing him into the wild. (Why does this summary sound like some kind of animal rehabilitation program?(´▽`ʃ♡ƪ))

Pros:

  • Jing Yuan tops! Yaaaaaay!

  • Plot! OK, technically filler plot to explain how a kid who grew up in jail has social skills and stuff, but at least it's some kind of plot.

  • Unhealthy separation anxiety. I'm such a sucker for this trope.

  • Over-worked Jing Yuan! Finally, someone acknowledging how rough the poor guy had it this whole time.

  • Concerned!Fu Xuan cameo. I feel like Fu Xuan is really one of the few people who actually grasps how hard Jing Yuan works, despite her sharp tongue.

Cons:

  • No Quintet. I mean, I get this is a forward looking fic, but not having any Quintet mentions always feels a little empty... On the other hand, not having to deal with "Jing Yuan is the baby of the group" trope is a plus so...

Meanwhile, have been thinking that the Luofu arc, thematically, really sticks out like a sore thumb against the backdrop of Star Rail. It has a lot of awkwardly detailed world building lore, but the story feels really rough and choppy, changing thematic focus all the time. I'm beginning to get more and more convinced that there was another game that got cannibalized into Star Rail, resulting in this weirdly detailed yet poorly paced arc.

cashew: Sumomo acting like Sumomo (Chobits // Sumomo)

【景枫/景恒】半面妆

Locked in a room that can only open after sex trope. Emotional torture porn.

Pros:

  • Jing Yuan tops!

  • Biologically male bottom!Dan Feng!

  • Gentle emotional sex!

  • Emotionally torturing Jing Yuan for the entire PWP!

  • Talking awkwardly about feels and still not being able to resolve anything because they'll just forget about everything as soon as they leave the room!

  • Self-sacrificing Jing Yuan's biggest concern is making Dan Feng comfortable (both physically and emotionally)!

  • Dan Feng has no fucking clue what happens in the future but can tell Jing Yuan is suffering. Maaaaangst.

  • Metioning Jing Yuan's 300-years long military campaign backstory during the 721 year time gap. (I cannot find English references to this, so here in this Chinese article, screencaps show 青镞 explaining that Jing Yuan had to leave Mimi behind for 300 years after being sent out on a military campaign and, when he came back, an aged Mimi walked up to him and died in his arms. 〒▽〒 WTF miHoyo, what's your problem?! — But also, 300 YEAR MILITARY CAMPAIGN. So much angst!)

Cons:

  • References to Jing Yuan being a kid during Quintet era... boo.

I...I like this fic. I can even forgive the minor drawbacks because holy shit, I love this emotional torture porn. Of course, the super tragic aspect is that despite the feelings being returned, all of this is will just get re-set back to the status quo, so no actual progression of the relationship.

Was it worth digging through literal hundreds of crappy fic for this? Um... I don't know but this fic makes me happy.

A slight follow up to the Mimi backstory: Since there's canon confirmation that Jing Yuan was leading a military campaign that lasted 300 years as the general, I think it's pretty reasonable to assume that the Cloud Knights are actually kept pretty busy. If they're not defending themselves, then they're out there pre-emptively fighting something. So my headcanon persists that the "peaceful" years Luofu experienced is not "no active military campaigns" so much as "no invasions from enemies", but the Cloud Knights are engaged in a prolonged external war to keep the enemies at bay and too busy to organize an invasion of Luofu.

In other words, the Cloud Knights have been fighting this whole time. It's just the fighting was moved off of Luofu rather than taking place on Luofu while Jing Yuan was the general. It also makes more sense for the Xianzhou people to be in a relatively constant state of war, because why the hell else would they maintain such expensive war machines if they didn't have constant on-going military operations? Given the immensely high militarization of Luofu, it's hard to imagine they've been living "in peace". Also, I've noticed the Chinese descriptions actually never used "peace" to describe Luofu under Jing Yuan's leadership. They used things like "prosperity", "supremacy", or "stability".
